Water/gas pipes and trunk line pipes: a guide on electric-welded pipes for PUF
To apply the PUF insulation, we use two types of steel pipes, electric-welded and seamless. These pipes are further divided into a number of subcategories. In this article we focus on general application electric-welded pipes.
Types of electric-welded pipes
Welded pipes are manufactured using a longitudinal or spiral weld.
Spiral welded pipes have multiple application restrictions, and are used very rarely. Most often, longitudinal welded pipes are used for insulation — general application, water and gas and trunk line pipes.
WGP pipes: features and application
The second type of electric-welded pipes is WGP. They are specified in GOST 3262-75. As opposed to other welded or seamless pipes, they are designated based on the nominal diameter instead of the actual outside diameter. Appropriately, these pipes are referred to using DN, short for “diameter nominal”.
For example, if you purchase general application pipes of 159 in diameter, you will not be able to join them with DN150 WGP pipes.
Water and gas pipes are available in light-weight, standard and reinforced versions (depending on the wall thickness).

We deal with WGP pipes with smaller diameters, between DN20 and DN40. When a customer requests DN100, we recommend to agree on the application of standard pipes 108 or 114 in diameter, as they are less expensive and are always in stock.
Trunk line pipes: types and commonly used sizes
Trunk line pipes are available in diameters of 114 to 1420 mm and in one of the three following types:
- longitudinal welded pipes in diameters of 114—630 (high-frequency electrical resistance welding);
- spiral welded pipes in diameters of 530—1420 (arc welding with one or two longitudinal welds);
- longitudinal welded pipes in diameters of 530—1420 (arc welding with one or two longitudinal welds).
Trunk line pipes are produced in different pipe grades from К 34 to К 60. Higher numbers correspond to heavier loads which the product can withstand.
Typically, we receive PUF orders for trunk line pipes of large diameters (530, 630, 720, 820, 1020), with a variety of wall thicknesses and weld types.
Trunk line pipes are characterized by a large number of specifications and by stringent requirements to out-of-straightness, ovality and other defects. However, the most distinctive feature of trunk line pipes is the total absence of small diameters and the complexity of placing a manufacturing order.
It is reasonable to consider using this type of pipes for diameters of 530 mm and over, and manage with standard welded pipes in other cases.
SAVERHOT is an official dealer of major Russian steel plants, so we always keep between 2,500 and 4,000 tons of pipes in stock at our warehouse. We continuously replenish our stock with commonly used items. The data on availability are always relevant as they are updated from the ERP system in real time.
